Patio & market umbrellas
Large-format shading for gardens, terraces, cafés and resorts. This is the highest unit value category we handle, and the one where a fabric or frame upgrade is most visible to the end buyer — which is why most outdoor living brands start here.
Custom orders only. Nothing here is held in stock or sold as-is — the photographs are reference pictures showing styles the cluster can make, not other customers' designs.
Standard configurations
These are the configurations most factories in the cluster build without tooling. Anything outside the table is still possible, but expect a longer sampling stage and, for new frames or bases, a tooling charge.
| Item | Standard range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canopy diameter | 2.0 m / 2.4 m / 2.7 m / 3.0 m | Square 2×2 m and 2.5×2.5 m available from selected factories |
| Shape | Round, square, hexagonal | Square canopies usually carry a higher MOQ |
| Canopy fabric | Polyester 180T–210T; solution-dyed acrylic on request | Water-repellent finish standard; higher UV resistance on request |
| Ribs | 6 or 8 ribs, steel or fiberglass | Fiberglass resists corrosion — preferred for coastal and resort use |
| Pole | Aluminium or steel, 32 / 38 / 48 mm | Wall thickness is a common cost driver; specify it in your enquiry |
| Opening | Crank, push-up, or pulley | Crank is the default for 2.7 m and above |
| Tilt | Collar tilt, push-button tilt, crank tilt | Confirm which mechanism if your retail channel specifies one |
| Base | Cross base, resin, granite, steel plate | Often quoted separately — ask for it to be priced as a line item |
| Vent | Single or double wind vent | Affects wind behaviour; recommended for exposed sites |
| Printing | Screen print, heat transfer, digital print | Method depends on panel count, colour count and fabric |
| MOQ | 200–500 pcs per colour per size | Confirmed per item after specification is fixed |
| Lead time | 25–35 days after sample approval | Extends in peak season, roughly December to March |
Typical values for standard models. Your quotation and pro forma invoice define the order.
What changes the price
If you need to hit a target price, these are the four levers that move it most. Everything else is comparatively marginal.
1. Pole material and wall thickness
Aluminium costs more than steel and resists corrosion; wall thickness has a direct effect on both price and wind behaviour. Ask for the specification in millimetres, not just the diameter.
2. Fabric grade
Standard polyester is the baseline. Solution-dyed fabric holds colour far longer under sun exposure and is what hospitality buyers specify for replacement cycles beyond one season.
3. Rib material
Steel ribs are cheaper and fine for sheltered patios. Fiberglass flexes instead of breaking and is the usual choice for coastal, poolside and resort programmes.
4. Print coverage
A single-colour logo on one panel is the cheapest option. Full-panel digital print raises unit cost but is what turns a shade product into a branded one.
UV, wind and corrosion — what to specify
A patio umbrella is a fixed installation exposed to sun all day, which makes it the category where performance claims matter most and are most often vague. All three areas below have published test methods behind them.
UV protection
Where a UV claim is made, the national product standard requires UPF above 40 with UVA transmittance below 5%, tested to the textile UV method. Higher-tier regional specifications push the threshold above 50.
The test method matters: some require laundering and light exposure before testing, others test new fabric. The same canopy can produce different numbers. See canopy fabric for the comparison.
Wind behaviour
The standard wind test holds the umbrella at 10 m/s for 30 seconds. Ribs may invert — inversion is permitted — but the shaft and ribs must not deform or be damaged in a way that affects use.
For an open terrace or coastal site this is a starting point, not a guarantee. Venting, rib count and pole wall thickness are the variables you control, and base weight is the one people underestimate.
Corrosion
Metal parts are assessed by neutral salt spray — shaft for 4 hours, other parts for 2 hours — with the result graded against a defined scale.
This is the criterion that separates a hospitality installation that lasts several seasons from one that is replaced annually. Anodised or powder-coated aluminium and stainless hardware are the usual answers.
Published wind tests are conducted on a hand-held umbrella in a test rig, not on a 3 metre parasol on a terrace with a base. And UV ratings describe fabric, not assembled geometry — shade coverage depends on canopy size and sun angle. Use the standards to compare fabrics and frames, then specify the installation separately.
Who buys this category
Four buyer types account for most of the volume we see. Each cares about a different part of the specification, so telling us which one you are will get you a more accurate quote.
- Outdoor living brands — care about fabric colour range, UV performance and retail packaging
- Hospitality groups — care about corrosion resistance, replacement cycles and spare-part availability
- Retail chains — care about carton dimensions, barcodes and container utilisation
- Promotional distributors — care about logo placement and short lead times for campaign dates
Hospitality — rows of matching units, closed and stacked overnight
Outdoor living — a single large canopy covering a seating group
Balconies and small terraces — where a cantilever beats a centre pole
Building your version
Start from an existing tool set and change fabric, colour and print, or develop a new frame. The first path is faster and cheaper; the second gives you something a competitor cannot quote against.
Colour & fabric
Pantone reference accepted; confirm tolerance with the factory before sampling. Fabric can be matched to an existing range.
Logo application
Screen print for simple marks, heat transfer for gradients, digital print for full-panel artwork. Method is chosen after we see your file.
Packaging
Brown carton, printed carton, carry bag with logo, header card and barcode placement for retail channels.
Packing and shipping
Carton dimensions are confirmed per model and drive your container utilisation, so we send them with the quotation rather than after it.
| Item | Typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Packing | 1 pc per carton (poles sometimes bundled separately) | Carton size confirmed per model before quotation |
| Container load | Confirmed per carton dimension | Long poles often decide whether you fill by volume or weight |
| Loading port | Ningbo | About 1.5 hours by road from the cluster |
| Incoterms | FOB Ningbo, EXW, CIF on request | State your preferred term in the enquiry |
| HS code | 6601 for umbrellas and sunshades | Confirm the sub-code with your broker for your market |
Reference configurations
Six patio builds that factories in the cluster produce routinely. Treat them as a starting point: canopy shape, frame type and base weight are the three things worth fixing before you ask for a price.
Striped canopy on a centre pole — the most common market umbrella format
Cantilever arm — it clears the table, the upgrade most terrace projects ask for
Garden setting — 3.0 m is the usual upper canopy size for residential use
Rooftop and balcony sites — base weight matters more than canopy size
Evening use — lighting and valance trims are usually specified together
Landscaped courtyard — aluminium frame with a resin or granite base
Patio umbrella questions
Is the base included in the price?
Usually not. Bases are heavy and often sourced separately, so we quote the canopy and pole set first and price bases as their own line item. Tell us if you need them and we will include options.
Can you match a colour from my existing range?
Yes, send the Pantone reference and, if possible, a fabric swatch. We confirm the achievable tolerance before sampling, because dye-lot variation is normal between fabric batches.
How wind-resistant are these?
Wind behaviour depends on frame material, rib count, venting and the base weight, not on the canopy alone. Tell us the installation environment — sheltered patio, open terrace or coastal — and we will specify accordingly.
Do you supply spare parts?
Ribs, poles and canopies can be ordered separately for most standard models. If replacement parts matter to your after-sales, say so at quotation stage so we build the parts list into the order.
