Umbrella tips, ferrules & finials
Small parts, high volume, and the ones most often needed as spares: the rib tips that stop a frame wearing through the canopy, and the ferrule at the top that finishes the umbrella. Both are moulded or die cast locally.
What these parts are
Two different parts get confused under similar names. Being precise about which one you need saves a round of sampling.
| Part | Position | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Rib tip | End of each main rib, at the canopy edge | Covers the rib end so it cannot wear through fabric or catch on anything |
| Ferrule / finial | Top of the shaft, above the canopy | Finishes the umbrella and, on straight models, provides a point |
| End cap | Handle end | Closes the handle and can carry a logo |
| Ferrule sleeve | Where the pole meets a base or a two-piece joint | Joins sections and protects the tube end |
| Parameter | Common range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Zinc alloy, aluminium, plastic, wood | Zinc alloy takes plating best; plastic is cheapest |
| Process | Die casting, injection moulding, turning | Process follows material and volume |
| Bore / fit | Matched to rib or shaft outside diameter | The interface that most often fails — specify it |
| Finish | Chrome or nickel plating, matte coating, antique, painted | See finishes below |
| Colour | Metal finishes, or dyed / painted to Pantone | Tolerance confirmed before sampling |
| Branding | Cast or moulded logo, laser marking | Cast logos require tooling |
| MOQ | Confirmed per part and finish | Custom shapes and plating raise it |
| Lead time | Confirmed per item | Plating adds time |

Choosing by function
Plastic rib tips
Cheapest and lightest. Standard on folding umbrellas and the most common spare part ordered.
Metal rib tips
More durable and a visible quality signal. Heavier and they need a clean bore fit to stay on.
Zinc alloy ferrules
Die cast and plated, in everything from simple spikes to decorative shapes.
Wooden finials
Used on gift and heritage styling, usually in combination with a wooden shaft and handle.
Surface finish matters more than people expect
A tip or ferrule sits at the point of the umbrella that gets handled and looked at most. Finish is what separates a replacement part from a design element.
- Plating — chrome, nickel, antique brass; best corrosion resistance
- Matte coating — sprayed finish in any colour; softer look
- Antique finish — deliberately aged metal for heritage styling
- Painted — colour matched to your range; lower durability
Plating quality varies more than it looks. If the product is used near the sea, ask for salt spray testing — cheap plating fails visibly within a season.
Custom shapes
A distinctive ferrule is a low-cost way to make a model recognisable. Tooling is modest compared with a handle tool, and the part is small enough that the tool cost is usually recovered quickly.
Cast logo
Your mark formed into the die casting. Permanent and legible at small size.
Custom profile
A shaped finial instead of a standard spike. Needs tooling, quoted separately.
Matched set
Finial, end cap and handle in the same finish so the umbrella reads as one design.
What we check before release
| Check | What it prevents |
|---|---|
| Bore fit on the actual rib or shaft | Tips that fall off or split when pressed on |
| Plating adhesion and thickness | Blistering and flaking in humid or coastal use |
| Salt spray resistance | Rust appearing within one season |
| Burr and sharp edge | Snagged fabric and cut hands on the line |
| Colour and finish consistency | Visible mismatch across one order |
| Logo definition | Marks that are illegible at this size |
The most requested spare parts
If you run a repair or after-sales programme, these are the parts your customers ask for. Stocking them is cheap relative to replacing a whole umbrella.
Rib tips
The single most replaced part. Buy them in the same colour and finish as the original model.
Ribs and frame sets
Broken frames are the second most common replacement. See ribs & frames.
Handles
Often replaced on wooden and premium models. See handles.
Mechanisms
Auto open units and buttons. See mechanisms & hardware.
Adding a small percentage of spare parts to a finished umbrella shipment costs almost nothing in freight and is what makes an after-sales promise possible.
Tips & ferrule questions
Can you match tips to my existing rib size?
Yes. Send a rib or give us its outside dimensions, and we will match the bore. Bore fit is the specification that decides whether the part stays on.
What is the minimum for a custom shape?
Higher than for stock parts, because tooling is involved. We quote tool cost and unit price separately so you can judge the payback.
Which finish lasts best outdoors?
Quality plating generally outperforms painted finishes. For coastal use, salt spray testing is worth specifying.
Can I order spare parts in mixed colours?
Usually yes, subject to a minimum per colour. Tell us the split you need and we will confirm what the factory accepts.
