Umbrella ribs & frames
The rib set is what decides whether an umbrella survives its second season. Ribs fail at the joints and at the rivet holes, not in the middle of the span — which is why material and hole accuracy matter more than thickness alone.
What a rib set consists of
A frame is a set of matched parts, not a single item. When you order ribs, be clear about whether you want the full set or only the main ribs.
| Part | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main rib | Carries the canopy, runs from top notch to tip | Length and curvature set the canopy shape |
| Stretcher | Links the runner to the mid-point of the main rib | Determines how the umbrella opens and how much force it takes |
| Top notch / crown | Holds the top ends of the main ribs | Usually moulded or machined to match rib count |
| Runner | Slides on the shaft and drives the stretchers | Interface with the shaft is a common tolerance problem |
| Rivets & joints | Connect ribs to notch, runner and stretcher | Hole position accuracy decides whether the set assembles cleanly |
| Parameter | Common range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | U-channel, round, flat, double rib | Double rib construction resists inversion in wind |
| Rib count | 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 ribs | 16-rib sets are used on reverse-fold constructions |
| Material | Steel, aluminium, fiberglass, carbon | See material comparison below |
| Surface finish | Galvanised, nickel plated, powder coated, electrophoretic | Finish choice drives corrosion life |
| Matched to | Folding 21"–27", golf 60"–72", patio 2.0–3.0 m | Rib length follows the finished umbrella size |
| MOQ | Confirmed per profile and finish | Custom profiles and plating raise it |
| Lead time | Confirmed per item | Plating and custom tooling add time |

Choosing a rib material
This is the single decision that most affects how the umbrella behaves in wind and how long it lasts near the sea.
| Material | Behaviour | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel | Stiff and strong; bends permanently if overloaded | Lowest | Standard folding and promotional umbrellas |
| Aluminium | Light and corrosion resistant; less spring-back than steel | Low–mid | Weight-sensitive folding umbrellas |
| Fiberglass | Flexes and returns; does not rust | Mid | Golf umbrellas, coastal and resort programmes |
| Carbon | Highest strength-to-weight; expensive | Highest | Premium and technical umbrellas |
A steel rib set is fine in a city and a poor choice on a beachfront terrace. If you tell us where the umbrella will be used, we will specify the rib material accordingly rather than defaulting to the cheapest option.
Four things that move the price
1. Material
Steel to carbon spans a wide price range. The jump from steel to fiberglass is usually the most cost-effective upgrade you can make.
2. Profile and tooling
Standard U-channel and round profiles need no tooling. A custom profile means a new roll set and is quoted separately.
3. Surface finish
Galvanising is cheapest, powder coating adds colour options, and plating costs more again. Finish also determines corrosion life.
4. Hole accuracy
Tighter tolerance on rivet holes costs more to hold but is what makes a frame assemble smoothly on a line. Worth specifying if you assemble at volume.
When a custom profile makes sense
Most buyers should start from a standard profile. Custom tooling pays off in two situations: a design competitors cannot copy, or a volume high enough to amortise the tool quickly.
- Custom curvature to change the canopy shape
- Double-rib or reinforced construction for wind
- Specific rib count for a new model
- Colour-matched powder coating to your range
Tooling you pay for is yours. Confirm it in writing before payment, and confirm that it will not be used for another customer's production.
What we check before release
Rib defects show up on the assembly line or in the customer's hands weeks later. These are the checks that catch them.
| Check | What it prevents |
|---|---|
| Curvature consistency across a batch | Canopy panels that do not sit flat or that pull at the seams |
| Rivet hole position | Frames that bind or will not assemble on your line |
| Coating adhesion and thickness | Rust appearing in the first season, especially in coastal markets |
| Salt spray resistance | Corrosion on plated parts in humid or seaside use |
| Spring-back after flexing | Fiberglass ribs that take a permanent set instead of returning |
| Burr and edge condition | Snagged fabric and injured hands on the assembly line |
Packing and shipping
| Item | Typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Packing | Bundled by length, or carton packed | Set packing per umbrella available on request |
| Set assembly | Ribs, stretchers, notch and runner as one set | Ask for this if parts feed straight into assembly |
| Loading port | Ningbo | About 1.5 hours by road |
| HS code | 6603 for umbrella parts | Confirm the sub-code with your broker |
Rib layout in use
Two views from underneath a finished canopy. The joint between rib and stretcher is the point that fails first in wind, so it is the point to specify.

Rib questions
Can I buy only main ribs, without stretchers?
Yes. Tell us which parts of the set you need. Many spare parts programmes buy main ribs only, because those are the parts that break.
Can you match ribs to an umbrella I already import?
Yes. Send a sample umbrella or a rib set and we will measure it and quote a match. This is the usual starting point for a spare parts programme.
Do fiberglass ribs really matter?
Where wind or salt air is involved, yes. Fiberglass flexes and returns instead of bending permanently, and it does not rust. For a city folding umbrella, steel is usually sufficient.
What if I need a profile nobody stocks?
It can be tooled. Tooling is quoted separately, paid before production, and remains yours. We will tell you the volume at which tooling pays for itself.
