Custom patio umbrellas for US buyers
US programmes have the same product decisions as European ones and a different compliance and logistics picture. This page covers what changes when the container is bound for the United States.
What changes for a US shipment
The product is the same. The differences are in testing expectations, documentation, packaging rules and the freight and duty calculation.
- Chemical compliance: US buyers commonly ask for CPSIA lead limits and California Proposition 65 screening, alongside any retailer-specific restricted substances list.
- Classification: patio and market umbrellas generally fall under HS heading 6601. We supply accurate classification and commercial documents; duty rates and any additional tariff measures are your broker’s calculation, and they change — do not build a landed cost on a number from a supplier email.
- Retail packaging: US retailers often require specific carton marking, barcode symbology and, in some states, packaging substance declarations.
- Freight: FOB Ningbo to West Coast or East Coast ports; transit varies by service and season, so we quote the schedule at booking.

Testing we can arrange for the US market
CPSIA lead limits
Lead content screening on coated and painted components, arranged through a third-party laboratory with a report you can file.
California Prop 65
Screening against the listed substances relevant to textiles, coatings and metals, with the result stated plainly rather than assumed.
Mechanical and fatigue
Open/close cycling, rib strength and handle pull-out, tested to the method you name.
UV and colour
UPF testing to AATCC TM183 and colour fastness to ISO 105 series, with grades stated rather than adjectives.
Timing: work backwards from the season
US patio programmes are placed in late autumn for a spring shelf date. Budget 1–3 business days for quotation, 7–10 days for sample build plus courier transit, 25–35 days for production after approval, and sea transit that varies with the service. Booking production early matters more than negotiating hard, because peak season — roughly December to March — is when lead times stretch.
Questions buyers ask before the first order
What is the minimum order for US shipments?
Plan on 500 pieces per colour per size for custom specification. Stock colours with simple printing can run lower.
Do you handle duties and customs clearance?
No. We ship FOB Ningbo and supply accurate commercial documents and HS classification; duties, tariffs and clearance sit with you or your broker, and both change over time.
Can you test to CPSIA and Prop 65?
Yes. We arrange third-party testing and supply the report. Tell us which retailer requirement applies, because their lists differ.
Can we consolidate with other products?
Yes — umbrellas, beach shades and shelters can share a container, which lowers per-unit freight on smaller programmes.
How long is sea transit to the US?
It varies by service, port and season, so we quote the schedule at booking rather than promising a fixed number at quotation. Build a buffer into your shelf date.
Do you supply retail-ready packaging for US chains?
Yes, to your specification: carton marking, barcode symbology and packing quantities are set before production, not after.
Start with a specification, not a catalogue request
Tell us the size, fabric, frame, quantity and delivery window. We come back with factory options, MOQ, a sampling plan and an itemised quote — normally within one to three business days.
